Download Restarting computers in the IT environment is often hard to accomplish, without facing problems like: Very unhappy users Scenarios where you restart while the end-user is using the computer for a demo or presentation End-users calling Servicedesk and complaining about a virus that’s shutting down their computer Restarting computers that are already compliant, and did not need a restart. Error installing the Application web catalog

Just ran into an error this morning while installing the Application Web Catalog role on my ConfigMgr 2012 server. When trying to log on to the catalog I got an IIS error related. I look into the SMSPortalWebSetup.log file on the site server and noticed this Error: IIS Asp.Net is not registered To fix the error I had to manually registered the component Open a command prompt as administrator and navigate to C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework64\v4.0.30319\ type aspnet_regiis –i and Enter Remove the Application Web catalog role and reinstalled it (not needed but I didn’t want to wait for the reinstall process to [...]

Adding the Product ID to your Operations Manager 2012 (SCOM 2012)

Just returned from a customer where we installed the Final Realease of Operations Manager downloaded from Microsoft Volume License Service Center. After the installation we checked the About window in the Help Menu and as you can see from below it stated that we installed a Eval edition… To enter your license key so you avoid the Time bomb of 180 days you must use a Powershell cmdlet, start your Operations Manager Shell and enter the Set-SCOMLicense –ProductID command, like: Enter Y to Confirm the License, and thats it. Reboot your Management Server, and check the About window in the [...]

SCSM2012: The data warehouse registration failed

If you get the error "The data warehouse registration failed", when you try to register Service Manager with a Service Manager Data Warehouse server, it's maybe caused by the data and time formats settings for the service account on the Data Warehouse Management Server. Go to the Data Warehouse Management Server and log on with the service account, then set the data and time formats to English (United States) and log off. On the Service Manager Management Server, try to register with Service Manager Data Warehouse again. Hopefully this modification has solved the problem.

Eject CD script, quarantined by FEP! PowerShell to the rescue!

I guess everyone knows that you can’t enable BitLocker on a machine from a Task Sequence if there is a CD in the CD drive… The workaround is quit simple, just run a script to eject the cd drive before running the “enable BitLocker” step. Well the other day this script, a vbs, I use, was removed by Forefront.. I guess the heuristic scan evaluated the content of the script to be unsafe, and quarantined it.. This is obviously not good, as it’s needed by the task sequence… So I thought, maybe there is a way to eject the CD [...]

Enabling Email approvals for your requested applications in Configuration Manager 2012

By default application approvals must be done from within the ConfigMgr 2012 administrator console. If you have Service Manager 2012 you can use that to implement an approval process. For those of you who do not (yet) have Service Manager here is a tool that you can use. The solution consists of a Website and a Web Service. None of them have to be installed on the same server. Also there is no requirement to install any the components on the site server. Download our beta 0.9.8 version here How it works The Coretech Application Approval Server (CAAS) is installed [...]

All Windows Keyboard layouts

I’m working for this customer who needs computers deployed I several different country's. Because they run XP (I know!) they need that LCID – “hex code” number for the keyboard layout instead of the more user friendly “culture name” used in Win7, like en-US or da-DK. Every time I need these LCID’s I find myself going trough the internet trying to find the correct match for the country I need to deploy to. So here is a link to a list with all the info you could ever need for this.. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb896001 As a small bonus, I found this need [...]

Extending OSD progress UI Info in SCCM

While running a task sequence, info on what is happening is shown in the progress UI, well the name of the Task Sequence, and the step that is running anyway!! But what if we could extend that info to let us know other things as well! Turns out that is as easy as typing a little extra text in the Task Sequence editor. Example 1: Let say you are administrating a large environment, doing several OSD tests against a number of MPs, and DPs. Now wouldn’t it be nice if we could actually see where data is picked up, right [...]

Global conditions in ConfigMgr 2012

One of the very need features in the new Application model is Global conditions. A Global condition is a requirement rule that is evaluated in real time by the client. The client will only start downloading the application if the global condition is true. ConfigMgr. 2012 ships with several global conditions like memory, operating system, primary user etc. Those conditions are pretty useful and can be used right out of the box. Besides the canned conditions, creating custom conditions can be very powerful and all you need is a few steps to get your started. In this post, I’ll explain [...]

Creating the Reporting User role in ConfigMgr. 2012

Role based Security in ConfigMgr. 2012 is much different from ConfigMgr. 2007. The new version ships with predefined security roles like Administrator, Infrastructure Administrator etc. One role is missing though - the Reporting User role. Create the Reporting User role Open the ConfigMgr. Console, navigate to the Administration workspace and select Security, Security Roles Select the Read-Only Analyst role and click Copy on the ribbon. This role comes very close to our reporting only role. Name the Role Reporting User. Go thru all the security settings and remove all settings except Run Report. Click OK and save the custom role. [...]

Changing the regional related (small) stuff! Dot vs. Comma

During OS deployment you normally set the regional settings to match the nationality of the user who are to receive the computer! This can be anything from the OS UI and keyboard,  to Date and time formats, and is normally done using sysprep values like SystemLocale, UserLocale, UIlanguage etc. One problem though, is the UserLocale value, which sets all the Date and time formats. These settings are all pre defined in the system based on the regional setting, which means all machines running English UserLocale will get the settings defined for en-US by Microsoft. But every now and then, you [...]
